I’m here for a reason

Great leadership is about identifying beliefs and choosing the reality that work best for us.

Which belief do you choose? What is your reason, your purpose, your sense in life?

Knowing your purpose in life is as important as knowing your values. As important as knowing who your friends are… As important as knowing what makes you happy.

Last week I was talking to a friend on the phone when I saw this sticker sticking on a pillar.

“I’m here for a reason.” In little letters: “adidas”

Talking about purpose is nothing new in the history of the human being. Let me tell you a few examples.

Ancient Greek philosophers were already talking about where we are coming from and where we are going, and what is our intrinsic motivation. Aristoteles said that excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention. It represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

 

The psychological school of constructivism, gives an understanding of how we create our own reality in the act of knowing. Jean Piaget, the creator of genetic epistemology, says “behavior is the motor of evolution”. And behavior is triggered by purpose. So again, the purpose, the intention, our behavior is our motor.

Even in the most brutal experiences, finding a sense in life works as a reason to continue living. Victor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrists as well as a Holocaust survivor. His best-selling book is called „Man’s Search for Meaning”. It is about the importance of finding meaning in life.

Today, pop stars in the world of leadership like Simon Sinek also talks about the importance of knowing the purpose… starting with “why”.

Talking about belief sells. In this era of digital revolution, fast changing companies and flash communication, if you are talking about one of the most important ingredients for the human evolution, for retaining happiness, you get everyone’s attention, because life is about finding a purpose.

So, do you know your purpose in life? What are you waiting for to find out?

Great leadership is about identifying beliefs and choosing the reality that work best for us. Great leadership starts from our core, our heart, our level of awareness of how we are thinking, feeling and acting. With elevated awareness, we can radiate and spread higher levels of energy to achieve our goals.

I call my practice Lead You Up, because we can lead ourselves, choosing what reality works best for us. Empowering ourselves in this way, we can make the changes of our lifes!

Veranstaltungen 2016

Im Juni und September 2016 boten wir im sowohl draußen im Freien, wie auch in unsere Räumlichkeiten, Workshops an.

Basierend auf dem Konzept, dass jeder Lehrer und Schüler ist, hatten wir einen außergewöhnlichen Austausch von Wissen und Kompetenzen. Der Workshop bot faszinierende Möglichkeiten an, die Fähigkeiten jedes Mitglieds der Gruppe weiter zu entwickeln, die Gruppe neu zu organisieren und leiten und eine gemeinsame Vision mit gezielten Schritten festzulegen.

cache_2463096100Coaching im Freien bietet großartige Ergebnisse. Als wir die Gruppe fragten, was sie von dieser Erfahrung mitnahmen, sagten sie: “Ich fühle mich einfach im Gleichgewicht und glücklich”, “sich zu konzentrieren ist so viel einfacher, wenn man in der freien Natur ist”, “wir können hier auf einer anderen, effektiveren Weise kommunizieren”. Unsere Teilnehmer sprachen also über Glück, Konzentration und Kommunikation. Diese Erfahrungen machen so viel Sinn, da sich die Gruppe glücklich und großartig fühlte, weil die Erfahrung draußen in der Natur von Wohlfühl-Hormonen, wie Serotonin aktiviert wird, sie konnten sich im Freien besser konzentrieren, weil die Aufmerksamkeit durch Bewegung und frische Luft erhöht wird und sie konnten besser kommunizieren, weil im Freien die Aktivität im Gehirn zunimmt, und dieses für Empathie und emotionale Stabilität verantwortlich ist…

Why hiking?

I asked my clients why they think we did this coaching and hiking day in the mountains. They said:

“Just being out of the routine helped me to be closer to myself.”

“Movement helped me to think. The fresh air helped me to feel. I knew where to go without asking.”

“Because we go out! We stop with our daily life. I din’t had one minute of stress.”

Ask yourself, why do you think being out in the nature is going to help you?

When you bring your body in movement you metabolism culrs up, oxygen in the blood increases, you start to expluse happyness hormones… Like one of my clients said: It’s perfect to reduce stress! Your cortisol mirror goes down, you start to feel light and you get a free head for learning, grow and discover yourself.

Mistakes are opportunities for growth. Leaders view mistakes as necessary steps.

There is a lot of talk these days about “fail-friendly environments”, especially in the context of innovation and product development. Why is that? And how does this concept relate to leadership?

Mistakes are a way which does not take you directly to your goal, your purpose. They are deviations from your original mission. If I ask clients what mistakes mean to them, I mostly get the answer that a mistake is something which is wrong. And wrong means that something is not the way it should be, is not true, or is not real.

Do you remember my last post? How many realities do we have? As many as we take perspectives. So from this angle, a mistake is just an interpretation. You can interpret something as a mistake, or as a step.

There is this really nice quote, posted all over the place these days: “You can never make a mistake”. I do not know if it is true, but it is supposed to be from Einstein. Which is well possible, because this guy wrote many nice things about how you can understand the world, and make the best of it.

Why this quote, you can never make a mistake? I understand it this way: Imagine a baby taking his first steps. What happens? He falls many times, until he gets the balance right. For more stability, he has to try again and again. He cannot walk yet, he has to learn it. In this case nobody would say, this baby is doing something wrong. Of course falling is a deviation from the original mission of walking, but it is necessary to learn and continue. And the baby is happy which each step he takes, with his achievements, with a bigger smile every time.

We forget very often in our daily routine how important it is to try different things to learn something new. The easiest way to avoid mistakes is to keep doing what you have been doing. But if we always do the same, things are not going to change, and develop. If you want something new, you have to go for new ways you never tried before. Innovation requires mistakes.

What is holding us back from taking a new step, from doing something we never tried before? What is it? Fear?

Whenever we have a moment of desperation, when we do not know how to keep going, when we are afraid of what it is going to happen, we have to consider decisions different from what we normally do… so it is completely natural that we feel fear. We do not know how it is going to go. We are afraid to make a mistake… At the same time, these are exactly the moments where we can really start to be creative, when we can try different things — and make mistakes to learn — and when we can take big steps to grow, to develop. In this moment, when we have to act in a new way, we can choose how to move on. Without crisis, there is often no progress. Without disagreement, there is no discussion. Without discussions, there is no investigation, no productivity, no development, no growth.

A leader views mistakes, crises, and disagreements as necessary, even helpful steps for improvement. These situations are opportunities for growth. Therefore, a great leader strives to create a “fail-friendly” environment — one without fear of mistakes.

Leadership means the capability to interact. A great leader never stops to gather perspectives.

Why is it so important for a leader to be open, to have unrestricted access to information? Why is it, that the more perspectives you have, the better a leader you are?

Many might say, “reality is a picture which does not depend on wishes or convictions”. I am looking at a volume of one of these really old school dictionaries: 1979, “The Modern Lexicon” — funny name after almost 37 years. This encyclopedia defines reality by “materiality” and “truth”. This duplicity brings the definition of reality much more to the point.

One of the first things I learned in university was that Kant once said: “We never interact with reality as it is, we interact with perceptions, with reality as we experience it.”

So what is materiality, and what is truth? Materiality is the objective way of understanding. Truth is the subjective side of reality: our interpretations, our own views. I love this topic, so I have to be careful to keep writing a blog entry, and not end up drafting a novel…

You can talk about ontological reality, the material one, the one which just exists: the glass is filled with 50% water, and 50% air. This is talking about materiality.

An interpretation of the above would be, the glass is half full — or half empty. That is what we call the truth, the construction of what we think reality is.

I am passionate about the idea of these constructions of reality. This theory is called Constructivism. It says that we experience the world as it appears for us. Such concepts also appear in the subject of Neuropsychology: We don’t see with our eyes, we see through the central midpoint of our brains. So reality is perception, and perceptions are constructions and interpretations we make through filters in our brains². We design these filters throughout our life. This means that we construct how the world appears for us. We deal with the truth, and not with materiality.

But if we all have our own constructions of reality, how can a leader reflect on himself, and effectively interact with his team?

Being a great leader requires knowledge of different perceptions, and having this knowledge means to have the capability to interact. So a great leader is open to all points of view, without judgment. A leader can integrate multiple sources of information. So “knowledge” means “to be able to operate in a specific social situation”², by being non-judgmental and by listening and considering all perspectives, being one step closer to the truth.

A great leader works on maximizing his personal and professional potential, and that of his team, by assisting his environment in being non-judgmental, and never stop listening. This is what I mean when I say that leadership is the capability to interact.

While you judge you determine reality. Be a leader by being aware of your judgment.

While we judge we are forming a conclusion. We form an opinion and at the same time we are limiting a situation, a person, ourselves.

What happens when you tell someone he is a good or a bad person? You are determining this person. How about when we talk about capability? What happens when you tell someone he is not able to do something? Do you think you are the one who can define a person by saying how capable or intelligent this person is? No? But how many times do we do these things? How many times in our life have we said: This guy is sooo stupid… And then the funny thing is, that if we are lucky and we get to know this person a little better, we find out that this person is really cool 🙂 And maybe he becomes our best friend 🙂

Another example: When you are facing a challenge, how many times have you said “this so hard, I won’t make it”? And then you do make it after all…

Have you ever heard about the book “The Hard Thing About Hard Things” by Ben Horowitz. The title of this book bothers me: Why is Horowitz describing things as hard? OK, I know, It is a marketing strategy, and maybe if I would not be in a phase of trying to avoid judging, I would buy it. Then I would think: Life is hard, so this book can help.

But while we judge, in this case a situation, we are keeping the situation from possibly being any other way. When I say: This is hard, then I am limiting this situation to being hard. It is hard, and that is it. How was your exam? Hard. How was the preparation of your wedding? Hard. How was the European Championship semi-final for the Germans? Hard.

So for me, Horowitz is saying: Things are hard. And all the examples in his book, “the things”, are predetermined to be “hard”. And he is determining this for all of his readers. Anybody who is going to buy this book knows, from the beginning, that it is about hard situations, so they cannot be any other way. So my first thought was: Who does he think he is? Why is he keeping us from giving a situation, “the things”, our own perspective?

So I asked my friend, who is currently reading this book, for an example. What can be so hard? The answer was: Firing your best friend. Oh! I was speechless, of course. I knew immediately what this person was talking about…

We discussed if it was possible to see this situation in another way. We reframed the situation, we gave the “thing” another frame, or context. We also talked about what it could mean to the best friend to find a new job, and that maybe this friend had been stuck in the old company for much too long. And while we were talking, we found ways of not seeing this situation as hard. Instead, we explored different perspectives until the situation had revealed great potential, and all feeling of hardship had disappeared. For me the discussion ended when my friend said: Well maybe that wasn’t a good example for a really hard thing 🙂

The point is, we are so used to limiting our thinking through our own or someone else’s judgment, that we forget to see situations from other perspectives. Leadership is the ability to see an opportunity everywhere. While you look for the opportunity, your forget the challenge.

Remember that “the hard thing” is a feeling, and we can change this feeling. By being aware of this, we can give the feeling another direction.

When we judge, we also judge ourselves. We are limiting our own view. Remember my last blog post? Be aware of how you are limiting yourself, so you can discover more about your authentic you!

Authenticity: You are more than you know. Be who you are. Find it out!

So many people are talking about authenticity when they talk about leadership. What does authenticity mean? Why all the fuss?

Leadership means the action or ability to lead a group. From a psychological perspective, you can do it by starting with yourself.

Ok. What is our first thought when we think about the word authenticity? It is about being who we are. So leadership means the ability to lead a group by being who we are. But who are we?

We are more than we know. We, as human beings, have huge potential, and we have a whole life to discover it.

We take our own decisions. Right now we are who we chose to be. We create ourselves. Having huge potential means we can be whatever we want to be. How? The answer is easy: If we go for it! It is our own decision do take steps in the direction we choose.

So: The more we learn about our true selves, the more authentic we can be.

Learning about ourselves, learning to lead ourselves, is a journey… a life journey.

What is your passion, which are your dreams, which values are driving you? But also: What is holding you back, which are our fears, which filters are limiting your perspective?

Background:

So… authenticity is a big word! Authenticity is learning about who you really are. It is breaking through the beliefs which are limiting you, and through all blocks which are holding you back from showing your true self. The more consciousness you have about who you really are, the more authenticity you can share.

I always carry a book in my bag, so in case I have to wait somewhere, or I sit on the subway, I can read… Sometimes I just take any book off my shelf, sometimes I pick a particular one because something is on my mind.

These days I carry a book about how to deal with obstacles. Or actually, this is just what it means to me. It is about a guy trying to find out what he needs to be happy. This guy talks about how to “believe in existence”. Believing in existence is giving him opportunities in life — while he believes, he sees opportunities. In his journey to find out who he really is, he wants to know what he needs, or what he has to do, to lead a fulfilled life.

The book is “The Consolations of Philosophy”, written in 2002 by Alain de Botton, and the guy in the book I talk about above is Friedrich Nietzsche. After being a fan of Schopenhauer, who proposes to deal with difficulty by enduring it, Nietzsche learned eventually that there are other ways to confront difficulties in life: For example, by viewing them constructively: Finding a way to make the difficulty work for him, instead of suffering through it. Believing in existence.

On his journey to find out who he really was, by reflecting on other perspectives and believing in the full potential of the human being, Nietzsche found out that suffering is optional. Nietzsche said we only suffer because we do not achieve fulfillment spontaneously. He found out that he was more than he thought. Going for your full potential in life, mastering obstacles, and looking for what you really want, you can find out who you really are.

So lets find out what is limiting us, lets break through our fears, and find out how to lead ourselves and our environment. Lead.You.Up! Start with yourself!

Workshop 2016

In June 2016 I offered a Workshop to a wonderful group of artists of the Cultural Center of Casa Planas, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, getting great results! Embracing the concept that everybody is your teacher and your student, we had an extraordinary exchange of knowledge and competencies.

The Workshop offered a fascinating way of discovering the high capabilities of each member of the group, how to lead the group, and to create a vision and define the necessary steps for the future to hold together and grow.

All about energy…

What is energy?

What happens if you start the day with a smile? You get one back. This is constructive energy.

Energy is a connection: to yourself, to others …Also a connection to your team.

Leading is all about energy.

If you lead with constructive energy, you get great results. If you lead with extraordinary energy, you get extraordinary results.

Work-Life-Balance o “Balance your Life!”

como un condor¿Cómo podemos lograr poner en equilibrio nuestra vida personal y nuestra profesión?

Es interesante cómo solemos separar estos temas. Cuando en realidad no se trata de vidas separadas, por un lado la vida laboral y por otro la vida personal. Sino que se trata de una vida. No es necesario hablar de Work-Life Balance, podemos simplemente nombrarlo: Life-Balance (equilibrio de vida) ya que eso incluye la vida laboral, personal, familiar etc.

Las preguntas son:

  • ¿Cómo logramos equilibrar nuestra vida?
  • ¿Qué es lo que queremos equilibrar en nuestra vida?
  • ¿Qué necesitamos para lograrlo?

¡Para ello necesitamos algunas cosas que deben funcionar! Por ejemplo, una alimentación sana, salud, amor y contactos sociales. Además, necesitamos perspectivas. No podemos deambular por la vida sin un sentido. Muchos hablan en este contexto de objetivos, del sentido de la vida o la clave para ser feliz. Y naturalmente también forma parte de éste sistema el trabajo… La vida profesional implica, entre otras cosas, el trabajo, los ingresos, el éxito y el bienestar profesional.

Todos, alguna vez, hemos escuchado de las famosas pirámides de la vida: arriba del todo está el yo, abajo del todo está lo material.

El hombre puede prescindir en gran parte de lo material, pero no de la alimentación, del amor, del aspecto social y de la realización personal.

Y todo esto necesita su orden, y no demasiado de una cosa, sino la otra parte queda corta. Aquí necesitamos un equilibrio.

Seiwert¹ se refiere, en este contexto, a formar un equilibrio para tener tiempo para las cosas importantes en la vida.

Demasiado trabajo no deja tiempo para el orden físico y el orden psíquico. Todo el día en un gimnasio, no trae ganancias. ¿Solo salir con amigos? Eso solo funcionaria si uno también trabaja con ellos y lo sigue combinando con el resto de los ámbitos.

¿Pero cómo ordenamos nuestras prioridades, para que nos podamos sentir bien en todos los ámbitos?

Durante mis estudios, la tutora de mi tesis me dijo: ¡el arte de escribir la tesis es lograrlo en 80 hojas, no en 150! El análisis estadístico ya abarcaba 50 hojas, lograr reducir la parte teórica en 40 hojas fue muy duro, pero valió la pena. Mi trabajo consistió en concentrarme en lo más importante.

¿Cómo me concentro en lo más importante? Solo así uno gana tiempo para hacer otras cosas.

Mi autor favorito, Paul Watzlawick, cuenta en otro contexto una historia, que también tiene mucho que ver con el tema de saber poner prioridades:

(…) La historia del hombre, que cada 10 segundos aplaude. La respuesta a este comportamiento tan curioso es: Para ahuyentar a los elefantes.“ ¿Elefantes? Pero si aquí no hay elefantes.“ Entonces el hombre dice: „Claro, ¿no ve que funciona?“²(Watzlawick, 2008, S. 53, traducción al español)

¡Para este hombre el comportamiento ahuyentar a los elefantes tiene prioridad! Y su comportamiento está para sí mismo fundamentado -en su mundo y en su realidad tiene sentido. Nosotros hacemos en nuestra vida cosas que siempre están de algún modo justificadas. La pregunta es si esa prioridad está correctamente puesta o si queremos las cosas de otro modo. ¿Podemos reconocer qué es lo que verdaderamente necesitamos?

Cuando Seiwert³ habla de Work-Life-Balance nombra cuatro aspectos que deben estar en equilibrio, eso quiere decir cuatro ámbitos a los que nos tenemos que dedicar con el mismo tiempo para sentirnos saludables: cuerpo, sentido, contacto y rendimiento. (Seiwert, 2014, S. 23)

Para ello hay que hacer pasos pequeños. Un pequeño cambio pone en movimiento un gran proceso.
